Insulating a period or older loft

Older homes are charming but often draughty. Here's how to insulate an older loft without causing damp or losing headroom.

Plenty of older houses still have lofts that are barely insulated. Bringing them up to standard makes a huge difference to comfort, but older roofs need a thoughtful approach.

Mind the ventilation

Older roofs rely on air movement at the eaves to stay dry. Pack insulation right into the corners and you can trap moisture, leading to condensation and mould. We always keep the eaves clear so the roof can breathe.

Headroom and loft rooms

If your loft is a converted room — or you'd like it to be — thick mineral wool isn't always practical. Slimline multi-foil fitted at the rafters reaches a high standard without stealing height.

Old insulation

Decades-old insulation is often thin, compressed or contaminated. If it's dry we can usually top it up; if not, we'll remove and replace it. Either way you end up at the recommended depth.
